2023-2024 Undergraduate Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]
Medieval and Early Modern Studies Minor
The program of courses comprising the Medieval and Early Modern Studies minor will enable students to gain an interdisciplinary insight into the medieval and early modern period. The coursework centers on the historical, cultural, literary, philosophical, and political contexts and cultures that developed in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period in Europe and the wider world. Students will come to understand how pre-modern societies, including societies with different religious, ethnic, racial, or cultural backgrounds, interacted both peacefully and in conflict. Though open to any undergraduate, this minor is designed to complement major studies in philosophy, history, English, modern language, and humanities studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. All courses will have three objectives: (1) to enter into the ethos of this period through an analysis of texts, methods, and viewpoints from a variety of disciplines, (2) develop fluency in the theories and methods of the varied disciplines that comprise medieval and early modern studies, and (3) gain expertise in historical, literary, theological, and/or philosophical research that will prepare and qualify students for graduate studies in this area.
