Objectives

Seattle University recognizes that many students come to the University wishing to explore academic programs before committing themselves to a major. Similarly, students may need to complete pre-requisite courses and other requirements before officially declaring their intended major. Academic Pathways Advising provides students with advising and academic coaching as they navigate their discernment and preparation processes to declare their major. Academic Pathways Advising also works with matriculated students considering changing their major. Each student is assigned an advisor who not only assists in academic guidance, but also aids in the process of discerning and preparing for their major and vocational options.

Academic Pathways Advising offers specialized services to guide students through the major exploration process. These services include:

  • Personalized, holistic advising from professional staff
  • Information on academic majors at Seattle University
  • Intentional, developmental activities to work through the discernment of potential majors
  • Academic coaching through the specific requirements for an intended major

General Program Requirements

Academic Pathways Advising serves all undeclared students. Students enroll in core and exploratory courses appropriate to their academic level. There is no additional coursework required, however students are required to meet quarterly with an advisor and complete  activities designed to support their progress toward declaring a major. After having met the entrance requirements for the major of their choice, students may apply for admittance into a major or professional school at any time after their first quarter but must do so prior to the attainment of junior status. Students who fail to apply for or be accepted into a major or professional school by the attainment of junior status are subject to dismissal from the university.
