CISS 2110 - Economics of Wealth and Inequality5 credit hours Formerly - HUMT 2110 The past two centuries or so have been witness to an unprecedented rise in global living standards and the concurrent rise of market capitalism. While capitalism has resulted in increased productivity, it has also been accompanied by unparalleled global economic inequalities, and growing threats to our natural environment. This course discusses the meaning and measurement of economic inequality by first discussing foundations of market economics and then using these foundational principles to examine inequality and poverty. We will also look at the role of redistributive policies and visit some debates concerning capitalism, inequality and democracy.
