STMC 551 - Advanced Pastoral Care Skills

This course provides advanced skill formation for pastoral/mental health counseling of adults. The theological, psychological, and philosophical aspects will be integrated into the skill building required for advanced study in the theory and technique of counseling. The course will utilize case material from students’ lives and experiences as well as role plays of counseling sessions utilizing advanced skills such as intervention, challenge, re-direction, formulating a change plan, and intake processes. Each student will participate in both the 3 hour class sessions and an additional 3 hours per week in an informal setting, such as university campus ministry, church related youth or adult ministries, or community social service agency. Prerequisite: STMM 553.
