NPLR 5480 - Social Justice in the Third Sector3 credit hours This course approaches social justice as a key component of the third sector. We will ask: what are the possibilities and challenges as we work for greater social justice in our personal and professional interactions, in our organizations and in our communities? Because self-awareness is essential for social change, we will explore the beliefs and systems which define difference, power and privilege, and consider our own unique and complex social identities. Through reading, discussion, application, and debate, we will explore common conceptual frameworks for social justice, and apply those frameworks to nonprofits and philanthropy. We will identify strategies that support greater social justice in our work; consider the role of nonprofits in social justice movements inside and outside of the United States; and learn from practitioners who are working for social change. Elective.
