Master in Teaching with Special Education Endorsement

The MIT with special education endorsement is for those who are not currently certified teachers, but who are interested in pursuing special education as a career. Students may complete both a Residency teaching certificate and the endorsement in special education through 6 quarters of full-time study. For further information, student should review the MIT with special education endorsement brochure, visit the MIT website or contact the special education program director. This option is only available to MIT students who enter in a spring cohort; students who enter in a fall MIT cohort are not eligible for the MIT with special education program.

I. Prerequisites

II. MIT Requirements

57 TEED credits, including:

TEED 5010 - Education for Social Change 5 credit hours
TEED 5011 - The Arts and Cultural Diversity 1 credit hour
TEED 5012 - Learners and Instruction 1 to 13 credit hours (11 credits)
TEED 5013 - Peer Coaching Field Experience 2 credit hours
TEED 5023 - Middle School Field Experience/Seminar 1 credit hour
TEED 5025 - MIT Special Education Practicum 6 credit hours
TEED 5035 - Child Abuse and Related Issues 1 credit hour
TEED 5040 - Reflective Teaching for Social Justice 3 credit hours
TEED 5041 - Reflective Teaching for Social Justice Service Learning 3 credit hours

Choose one of the following two courses:

TEED 5021 - Elementary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment 16 credit hours
TEED 5022 - Middle and Secondary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment 16 credit hours

Choose one of the following two courses:

TEED 5026 - Teaching Internship (elementary) Special Education 8 credit hours
TEED 5027 - Teaching Internship (secondary) Special Education 8 credit hours

III. Special Education Endorsement Requirements

21 credits, including:

EDUC 5000 - Introduction to Educational Research 3 credit hours
SPED 5420 - Language, Literacy, And Numeracy: Assessing and Teaching Students with Learning Differences 3 credit hours
SPED 5430 - Positive Behavior Support 3 credit hours
SPED 5450 - School Consultation and Intervention: Action-Based Research 3 credit hours
SPED 5460 - Advanced Behavioral Interventions and Support 3 credit hours
SPED 5470 - Teaching Students with Autism and Low Incidence Disabilities 3 credit hours
SPSY 5640 - Individual Educational Assessment 4 credit hours

MIT Additional Information

Certification

The university recommends a student who has successfully completed an approved program to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction which issues the appropriate certificate.

Special Education Endorsement

Students completing the 60 credit MIT program may apply up to 6 credits towards an educational specialist degree or the endorsement-only special education graduate program at Seattle University by completing the following courses:

3 credits of TEED 5010 /TEED 5012 /TEED 5021 /TEED 5022 satisfy SPED 5400 .
3-credit MIT elective in Special Education.

Reading Endorsement

Students completing the master in teaching program may apply up to 15 credits toward the post-master’s certificate/ literacy specialist prerequisites and required courses and the endorsement in reading by completing the following courses:

Prerequisites:

6 credits of TEED 5012 satisfy EDUC 5150 and EDUC 5110 /EDUC 5120 .

Required courses:

4 credits of TEED 5021 satisfy LITC 5250 and the 1 credit elective.
MIT elective in Literacy (3 credits) can meet a literacy course requirement.
