International Studies with Departmental Honors, BA

The honors major in international studies offers an opportunity for motivated and capable students to engage in more extensive interaction with faculty and fellow students, completing individual research projects that will further their goals and sharpen their skills.

Application to the major: To be accepted to the honors program, students must have both a cumulative and major grade point average of 3.50, and must have completed INST 2000 (or 200) and ECON 2130 (or 271). Interested students should apply to the INST Director in fall quarter of the senior year. Upon acceptance, a Change of Major, Degree, or Specialization form is submitted to the Office of the Registrar.

Completion of the major: During senior year, international studies honors students take the honors sequence (INST 4901 for 5 credits in fall or winter quarter, and INST 4903 for 5 credits in spring quarter). As INST 4901 substitutes for INST 4900, honors students complete 5 credits of course work above the norm for international studies majors, for a total of 75 credits in international studies. They also complete a substantial thesis, which is subject to approval by department faculty and must be presented in an oral defense. In order to complete the requirements for international studies honors and receive a notation to that effect on their transcripts, students must also maintain a cumulative and major grade point average of 3.50, and earn a grade of A- or A in INST 4901 and INST 4903. In addition to the bachelor of arts in international studies major requirements, the honors major includes:
