Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) program offers a curriculum based on theoretical foundations and practical applications. The program is designed to provide advanced study in mechanical engineering for students with a substantial background in the discipline. Full-time students, registering for four courses per quarter, can complete the program in three quarters. The program also accommodates part-time students.

The MSME is a 45-credit degree program which offers a broad curriculum of 15 courses. Required coursework includes 10 graduate level courses that span the entire breadth of disciplines of mechanical engineering and 5 graduate level courses from Albers School of Business and Economics.

The mission of the Seattle U’s Mechanical Engineering Department is to provide a technically rigorous design-focused education in a collaborative environment that emphasizes individual attention and connections to industry, while preparing students to help create a more just and humane world.

MSME Student Outcomes

At the time of graduation, students from our MSME program are expected to:

Demonstrate mastery of the advanced concepts and skills in the mechanical engineering field.
Demonstrate professional integrity, effective collaboration skills and an ability to communicate difficult concepts clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Develop an awareness of the societal, economic, and leadership challenges present in the engineering field, and develop skills to respond to those challenges in a just and ethical manner.
Develop a professional perspective focused on life-long learning that is informed by a global perspective and dedicated to serving the mechanical engineering profession for the betterment of society.

Admission Requirements

Applications for the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program are considered fall, winter, and spring quarters. All application materials should be sent to Graduate Admissions by the stated deadline for that quarter. The following documents are required for consideration:

Completed Application for Graduate Admission and non-refundable $55 application fee (Note: fee waived through fall 2022)
Four-year or equivalent bachelor’s degree, in mechanical engineering or related discipline, earned at an accredited institution.
Applicants with other degrees may be granted provisional admission to the program, contingent upon successful completion of stated undergraduate mechanical engineering courses.
Minimum GPA of 3.00 calculated from transcripts of all post-secondary educational institutions attended in the last 90 quarter/60 semester credits of your bachelor’s degree, including any transfer credits earned during this time, and any post-baccalaureate course work.
Letter of intent discussing background, interests, and reasons for wanting to pursue a master’s degree in mechanical engineering (one or two pages long).
Professional resumes summarizing academic and related work experience, if any, and contact information for two references.
Evidence of an earned four-year baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline from an ABET- accredited or regionally accredited institution. Applicants with an engineering or related degree from a non-ABET accredited institution must also provide official scores from a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) taken within the last five years. The subject test in Mechanical Engineering is optional.
