An introduction to the way visual art provides powerful ways of understanding and debating current social and cultural issues. Focuses on the roles artists, curators, critics, and the public play in the contemporary art world, its markets and institutions. Explores styles and issues such as abstract expressionism and gender, pop art and the media, minimalism and the body, land art and climate change, video art, performance and feminism, site-specificity and place, photography and identity, the postmodern turn and art in the era of expanding globalization.
