AVCS 3700 - Art, Culture, Power

5 credit hours
This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills that will help you develop a historical understanding of art and its role in the systems of power and privilege that have shaped the world from the pre-modern era to the recent past. The course focuses on the social function of art, image and object making in a variety of historical contexts that are linked through the exploration of critical constructs such as “the West,” “the East,” “identity,” “gender,” “race,” “the artist,” and “modernity.” Using art historical methods and interdisciplinary approaches, you will examine how the art of the past constructs our present and how visual objects can inspire social change and preserve cultural heritage.
