ENGL 4610 - Early American Literature

A study of the literature of the first settlers in the New World up to the American Revolution, focusing on writers in English and highlighting the major controversies that erupted during this period. Topics may include European attitudes towards and fantasies about the New World, how the settlers imagined masculinity and femininity, and the representation of indigenous and enslaved peoples. Authors may include John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, Roger Williams, Cotton Mather, Mary Rowlandson, Jonathan Edwards, Mercy Otis Warren, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abigail and John Adams, and Judith Sargent Murray.
