ARTH 3420 - History of Photography

5 credit hours
Formerly - ART 317
An exploration of the history and idea of photography from its emergence in the 19th century into the mid-twentieth century.  The course begins with early conceptions of “fixing the image” and focuses on changing technologies as they impacted the meaning of photography itself.   The course is organized thematically to cover the most important developments in the medium, always with a focus on how photography is understood by contemporaries and with attention to its social and cultural impact. No prerequisites, although ARTH 2120 or equivalent strongly advised.
