About the Center
Established in 2004, the Sundborg Center for Community Engagement (CCE) is the dynamic “front porch” of Seattle University and an important expression of Jesuit tradition and mission. The CCE connects campus and community for a more just and humane world. It strives to lead as an antiracist organization working toward a 2030 place-based vision to advance justice, remove barriers and educate changemakers.
The Center works collaboratively with campus and community partners to implement programs in the following areas:
Community Engaged Learning Courses
At Seattle University, community engaged learning (CEL) is a credit bearing educational experience in which students apply course material to contribute to equitable solutions for issues impacting one or more communities. CEL courses include reflection activities that integrate students’ learning across classroom and community contexts.
The Seattle University Youth Initiative (SUYI)
Since 2011, CCE has facilitated the Seattle University Youth Initiative (SUYI). Focusing on 100 square blocks in neighborhoods adjacent to campus, SUYI unites faculty, staff and students with youth, families, caregivers, educators and partners to co-create a culturally relevant, human and healing centered cradle-to-career pathway of programs and resources that enhance neighborhood scholars’ social, emotional, and academic development, growth and achievement.
