PUBM 5420 - Research Method for Development

The purpose of this course is to introduce graduate-level students to basic qualitative research methods that are used to find solutions for individual and organizational problems especially in the field of international development. Students will be introduced to various qualitative research methodologies, research paradigms, research question formulation, analysis of results and written presentation skills. Course content will include practical aspects of research such as developing project proposals, undertaking research implementation, analysis and dissemination. The course emphasizes participatory research approaches and skills necessary in development that involve community members in identifying and communicating their concerns, strategies for interventions, evaluation and advocacy. The course will explore the challenges of conducting research on sensitive issues and/or vulnerable populations using qualitative and participatory research methods. The course will also include preparing a research proposal, collecting and analyzing secondary qualitative data using (Ethnograph 5.0 qualitative data analysis computer program), report writing and dissemination strategies. Previous research experience is not required, but students will be expected to identify a development issue as a case example in which to apply the research techniques throughout this course. Students are encouraged to use case examples as they apply to their jobs, interests and/or projects. Part one of three courses. Elective.
