Humanitarian engineering, also known as “development engineering” and “global engineering” is the application of engineering principles to meet basic needs of mankind, with preference toward the poor and marginalized.
The program prepares students to engage with and integrate the technical and non-technical aspects of humanitarian engineering. Technical aspects of humanitarian engineering often involve developing sustainable access to water, food, shelter, energy, and healthcare in a manner that is attuned to the needs, desires, and capabilities of the individuals or communities they serve. Non-technical aspects of humanitarian engineering include subjects such as global development, community engagement, ethics, foreign language, and sustainability, among other topics.
