Requirements


In order to earn the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in International Studies, students must complete a minimum of 180 credits with a cumulative and major/department grade point average of 2.00, including the following:

I. Core Curriculum Requirements


Module I: Engaging Academic Inquiry


Module II: Engaging Jesuit Traditions


II. College of Arts and Sciences Requirements


  • Modern Language 1150, 1250, 1350 or equivalent (15)

NOTE:


Students earning this major must demonstrate competency through the level of 1350 in a language other than English. This competency is ordinarily achieved by successful completion of the three-course sequence: 1150, 1250, and 1350. Because these courses are a college requirement, no courses in the sequence may be taken on a pass/fail, correspondence, or audit basis. Placement into other than the beginning course of the sequence is achieved by acceptable performance on the Modern Language Competency Examination. See the Modern Languages and Cultures Department for details on the examinations. International students educated to age 16 in a language other than English may request a waiver of this first-year language requirement.

III. Major Requirements


70 credits, including:

Area II: Research & Professional Formation (25 credits):


Area III: Electives (15 credits):


Students are required to take at least 15 credits in a particular area of interest, including 5 credits of non-Western humanities (NWH) and 10 credits of 3000-4000- level courses 2, 3. Elective courses can be selected from one of three concentrations shown below or a student may choose to design their own. Approved courses are listed below. Other options with advisor approval. 

  • Human Rights
  • Conflict, Diplomacy and Peace
  • Sustainable Development
  • Individualized 

Area IV: Experiential Learning


At least three of the 70 credits in the International Studies program must be from one of the following options:

NOTES:


1. Students who place out of second year language (i.e., Modern Language above 1350) must take 30 credits of international studies major electives rather than 15.

2. At least five elective credits must be designated Non-Western Humanities (NWH).

3. At least ten elective credits must be 3000-4000 level.

4. Credits can be from a short-term study abroad course, or a quarter-length (or more) study abroad program.

5. INST 4950 - Internship counts as elective in any of the four concentrations.
