Requirements

In order to earn the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Asian Studies, students must complete a minimum of 180 credits with a cumulative and a major/program grade point average of 2.00, including the following:

CHIN 1150 - Chinese Language I 5 credit hours
CHIN 1250 - Chinese Language II 5 credit hours
CHIN 1350 - Chinese Language III 5 credit hours or equivalent
or
JPAN 1150 - Japanese Language I 5 credit hours
JPAN 1250 - Japanese Language II 5 credit hours
JPAN 1350 - Japanese Language III 5 credit hours or equivalent
HIST 1210 - Constructing Past and Present II 5 credit hours

NOTE:

Students earning this major must demonstrate competency through the level of 1350 in a language other than English. This competency is ordinarily achieved by successful completion of the three-course sequence: 1150, 1250 and 1350. Because these courses are a college requirement, no courses in the sequence may be taken on a pass/fail, correspondence, or audit basis. Placement into other than the beginning course of the sequence is achieved by acceptable performance on the Modern Language Competency Examination. See the Modern Languages and Cultures Department for details on the examination. International students educated to age 16 in an Asian language may request a waiver of the language requirement.

III. Major Requirements

A minimum of 60 credits in three areas of Asian Studies, including:

Area I: Foundation for Asian Studies (20 credits)

CHIN 2150 - Chinese Language IV 5 credit hours *
CHIN 2250 - Chinese Language V 5 credit hours *
CHIN 2350 - Chinese Language VI 5 credit hours *
or
JPAN 2150 - Japanese Language IV 5 credit hours *
JPAN 2250 - Japanese Language V 5 credit hours *
JPAN 2350 - Japanese Language VI 5 credit hours *
AIST 2000 - Introduction to Asian Studies 5 credit hours

NOTE:

*International students educated to age 16 in an Asian language may request a waiver of the language requirement, substituting additional approved electives in Asian Studies areas.

Area II: Modern Themes of Asian Studies (10 credits)

Choose two of the following courses that focus on theoretical methodology of Asian Studies, emphasizing issues beyond state-nation boundaries to cover larger regional concerns:

AIST /PLSC 4650 - East Asian Political Economy
ECON 3750 - Asian Economic Development 5 credit hours
INST /PLSC 3650 - East Asian Security
PSYC 4830 - Multi-cultural Psychology: Vietnam and Vietnamese-Americans 3 to 5 credit hours

Contemporary South Asian Literature and Culture

Area III: Major Electives (30 credits)
