There are two degree options for the MSW: a 2-year program and an Advanced Standing program for students with a completed bachelor’s degree in social work.

Degree Requirements:

2-Year Master of Social Work

The 2-year MSW requires completion of 66-degree credits, which includes a field practicum each quarter. The program is designed to be full time, completed in two years, and includes 1168 field practicum hours.

Minimum credits required for degree: (66)

Advanced Standing Master of Social Work

The MSW Advanced Standing program requires completion of 39-degree credits, which includes one field practicum of 720 hours. The program is full time for four quarters, starting in the summer intersession.

Criminal Background Check

Seattle University’s MSW Program requires all applicants to complete a national search criminal history background check upon admission. As part of the MSW curriculum through a field practicum, students may have unsupervised access to children under the age of 16, developmentally disabled persons, or vulnerable adults. The MSW Program seeks therefore to ensure the safety of potential clients and meet the requirements of Washington State’s Child and Adult Abuse Information Law (RCW 43.43.830 - 43.43.842).

A positive report that reveals a criminal history may preclude the student from many potential field placements and will limit the field placements available to the student. The Seattle University MSW program cannot guarantee field placements (a requirement for completion of the MSW degree and social work licensure) for students with a positive criminal background report.

Seattle University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital status, sexual or political orientation, or status as a Vietnam-era or special disabled veteran in the administration of any of its education and admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletics, and other school-administered policies and programs and employment related polices and activities.
