Cultivating faith and spirituality as a leader in Community

The Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies encourages students to discover their gifts and develop them for service. Students engage in a process of deepening self-knowledge, exploring the Christian tradition, and considering their potential to minister to the world. An integration of theology, scripture, pastoral and personal formation encourages optimum growth for ministers. The program prepares lay leaders to engage in theological reflection and to articulate “a faith that does justice” in a variety of contexts.

The pastoral studies degree uniquely addresses leadership skill development within the faith community context. Seattle University’s School of Theology and Ministry has signed formal partnership agreements with fourteen Christian denominations and over twenty-four interfaith collaborators, which provide a dynamic context for studying about faith community leadership in the 21st century.

Degree Requirements:

I. Scripture

6 credits:

STMM 5260 - Hebrew Scriptures 3 credit hours

Choose one of the following:

STMM 5270 - Christian Scriptures: Narratives 3 credit hours
STMM 5380 - Christian Scriptures: Letters 3 credit hours

II. Systematic and Historical Theology

12 credits:

STMM 5000 - Christian Anthropology 3 credit hours
STMM 5010 - Christology 3 credit hours
STMM 5030 - Theology in an Ecumenical Context 3 credit hours

Choose one of the following:

STMA 5160 - History of Ancient Christianity 3 credit hours
STMA 5170 - History of Medieval Christianity 3 credit hours

III. Spirituality, Ethics and Justice

9 credits:

STMM 5040 - Christian Ethics 3 credit hours
STMM 5600 - Ministry in a Multicultural Context 3 credit hours
STMM 5610 - Contemporary Christian Spirituality and Prayer 3 credit hours

IV. Pastoral Skills and Ministerial Formation

15 credits:

STMM 5530 - Pastoral Care Skills 3 credit hours
STMM 5540 - Fostering Communities of Faith 3 credit hours
STMM 5570 - Ministerial and Theological Integration I 3 credit hours
