Humanities Minor

Overview

The humanities minor introduces students to the humanities as a coherent course of study rather than as a general heading for all disciplines outside of professional fields and the sciences. In this minor, students organize and augment the skills they have acquired in the University Core. It builds their understanding of the humanistic tradition in western civilization and cultivates their humanistic capabilities. These capabilities range from clarity of thought and expression to aesthetic sensibility. The minor solidifies students’ understanding of the humanistic roots of Jesuit education in addition to developing their analytical and creative faculties. In the Humanities minor, students also cultivate an informed perspective that includes self-appropriation and an awareness of ethical responsibility by learning not simply about other cultures and civilizations, but also from them. Throughout the minor runs the Ignatian goal of personal transformation– a heightened sense of one’s self and meaning.

Requirements

In order to earn a minor in humanities, students must complete 40 credits of course work. Courses must be graded “C” or better to count towards the minor. Of the 40 required credits, 15 take place in Core: Creative Expression and Interpretation, Inquiry Seminar in the Humanities, and Humanities and Global Challenges. Courses in the Humanities (HUMT) make up the other 25 credits. Students take at least one course in each of the following three categories: Intellectual Heritage, Expression, and Ethical Engagement. The remaining credits may come from any courses listed in those three categories.
