HIST 1200 - Constructing Past and Present I

This course fulfills the College of Arts and Sciences Core requirement. It is designed to provide knowledge and skills that will help you develop a historical understanding of the world and the systems of power and privilege that have shaped it in the pre-modern era. The course particularly focuses on issues of politics at multiple scales, social hierarchy, slavery, and imperialism, as well as race, class, and gender relations. You will learn to critically examine an array of concepts that are historical constructs, such as “citizen,” “barbarian,” “the West,” “the East,” “nation,” “gender,” and “race,” that inform shared worldviews. Using historical methods and theories, you will examine intersectional categories in order to analyze historical problems in broad contexts studying both change and continuity.
