PSYC 5135 - Culture and Psychotherapy: The Social Foundations of Illness and Healing

3 credit hours
This course prepares students to work with clients of diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Students will explore the strengths and limitations of differing approaches to thinking about socio-cultural processes and therapy, including working with models of intersectionality, explanatory models of illness, the DSM’s Cultural Formulation Interview, indigenous psychologies and psychologies of liberation. Through dialogue and reflection, students will develop a deepened awareness of their own socialization, potential biases, implicit values and beliefs about mental health, healing, illness and afflicted persons.
