ART 317 - History of Photography

5
A survey of photography from its origins to the mid-twentieth century. The course begins with early conceptions of “fixing the image” and focuses on changing technologies as they impacted the meaning of photography itself.  The course is organized thematically to cover the most important developments in the medium, always with a focus on how photography is understood by contemporaries and with attention to its social and cultural impact. No prerequisites, although ART 212 or equivalent strongly advised.

Academic Level: Undergraduate
Instructional Method: Studio Instruction
School: College of Arts & Sciences
