HUMT 1500 - Composition: Language and Thought5 credit hours Formerly - HUMT 150 The Matteo Ricci Institute course HUMT 1500 is the equivalent of a standard UCOR 1100 or ENGL 1200 University course. The course aims to raise the student’s reading and writing to a level at or above the level required for success in the University and for success in whatever career they may enter in the future.
They learn to read closely selected literary and philosophical works, to read them comprehensively, analyze them accurately, and to criticize them judiciously and effectively in writing and in speech.
To gain facility in the craft of writing, the students write several papers on various subjects. They learn to select and evaluate sources, to structure an argument according to sound rhetorical principles, to persuade various audiences, and to demonstrate a firm foundation in diction, grammar, and logic.
