FREN 4700 - Francophone African and Caribbean Literature and Culture

A study of works representing a number of major literary and cultural movements in Francophone Africa and the Caribbean over the past century: la négritude, anti-colonialist and revolutionary writing, feminist writing, and post-colonial literature. Historical, philosophical and social factors as they are reflected in some important texts written in French, with a primary emphasis on the African expericence and Africian voices will be considered. A significant portion of the course will also be devoted to the challenges and practice of literary translation, both as a method of deep reading and as a mode of writing. This course is a capstone course for French majors.
