FILM 3630 - International Film: Japan

5 credit hours

A study of the history of Japanese film, from its beginnings to the present day, including the early influence of traditional Japanese art and theatrical conventions, the influence of Western culture and aesthetics, the political cinema surrounding World War II, the emergence of auteur directors into the international scene, and the recent impact of Japanese anime. The course will include such major directors as Ozu (Tokyo Story), Mizoguchi (Ugetsu Monogatari and The Life of Oharu), Kobayashi (Kwaidan) and Kurosawa (Seven Samurai), as well as more recent figures such as Juzo Itami (Tampopo), and Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away).
