A study of the literature of the first settlers in the New World up to the American Revolution, focusing on writers in English and highlighting the major controversies that erupted during this period. Topics may include European attitudes towards and fantasies about the New World, how the settlers imagined masculinity and femininity, and the representation of indigenous and enslaved peoples.
